【Seminar】 Exploring Potential: Drama Education Emerging in Chinese Contexts

Description:
Robin has spent five years working with drama teachers in China. Drama education is practice predominantly developed from the West, and the East has been trying to adopt its pedagogy into their education system and cultural context. Having experience in training drama teachers in both the East and West, Robin will share how he observed Chinese drama education communities adapt the principles of drama education to fit its unique cultural context. He will also share how the application in China enriches his reflection on the practice of drama education, as well as comparing this experience to what he has seen in other cultural contexts while teaching abroad.
After sharing, Robin will then lead a discussion about drama/theatre education and drama/theatre teacher education. He encourages participants to share their experiences and perspectives in response to his experiences internationally and in Australia.

How could and should we, as a drama education community, respond to the emerging needs for drama teachers in Chinese contexts?
In this workshop, Robin will lead a Process Drama based on a traditional story to model drama teaching and learning strategies. Interwoven with the experience of the Process Drama will be examples of images, videos and discussion.
This will be a practical experience of Process Drama with commentary on approaches and principles to teaching drama in response to the following ideas:
1) What to teach – what the curriculum says is "important learning"
2) How to teach – strategies to teach the content
3) Why teach – reasons why this is important learning

【Biography】IDEA President – Robin Pascoe
Robin was the chair of the steering committee for the transition of John Curtin College of the Arts and served as Chair of the College Council from 2002-2016. His research interests focus on drama teacher education, arts education; applied aesthetic understanding, creativity, imagination, story and play. He is currently researching making judgments about the effectiveness of arts education in schools as well the education of students with identified gifts and talents in the arts.
Recent publications include: Drama and Theatre: Key Terms and Concepts (3rd Edition), 2014, co-authored with Hannah Pascoe. Perth. Learning Drama/Teaching Drama (2019). Drama Education in the Global Context, in The Palgrave Handbook of Global Arts Education (2017).
